Big Idea
Video games and literature share the power of storytelling, where persistence, problem-solving, and courage allow heroes to overcome obstacles in any timeline.
Discussion Questions
- 1.How does the structure of a video game influence the way the story is told in this book?
- 2.Why do you think King Viking is so determined to stop Super Rabbit Boy, and what does that tell us about his character?
- 3.If you could travel back in time like King Viking, what is one thing you would change or visit?
- 4.How does the author use the 'game over' or 'life lost' mechanic to show that failure is just part of the learning process?
- 5.What makes Super Rabbit Boy a hero, and how does he show kindness to the citizens of Animal Town?
Lesson Plan

- 2.Draw a map of the level, including at least one obstacle and one power-up item.
- 3.Write a short paragraph describing the 'mission' Super Rabbit Boy must complete in this level.
- 4.Create a 'boss' character that King Viking might use to stop the hero in this specific level.
- 5.Share the level designs with a partner to 'play-test' the story by explaining how the hero would navigate the challenges.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!
Super Rabbit Boy’s Time Jump! serves as an excellent mentor text for teaching the craft of 'Pace-Write-Read' because it mirrors the rapid, rhythmic nature of digital gaming. By utilizing short, punchy sentences and present-tense narration, Thomas Flintham creates an immediate sense of urgency that keeps newly independent readers engaged and moving forward through the text. This book teaches students that writing is a form of design. Just as a game developer maps out levels, a writer maps out scenes. The book demonstrates how to use visual cues, such as speech bubbles and blocky illustrations, to break up text, allowing the reader to 'level up' their reading stamina while maintaining a high-energy, cinematic flow.

| Concept | The core concept is the intersection of gaming mechanics and traditional narrative storytelling. |
| Voice & World View | The voice is enthusiastic and heroic, reflecting the optimistic world view of a classic video game protagonist. |
| Setting & Place | Settings are distinct 'levels' like Mount Boom, which helps students understand how to establish a scene quickly. |
| Point of View | The story is told in the third person, focusing on the action as if the reader is watching the game unfold. |
| Original Characters | Characters like King Viking are archetypes; use them to teach students how to create clear 'good' and 'bad' roles. |
| Dialogue | Dialogue is sparse and punchy, often found in speech bubbles to keep the action moving. |
| Details | Details are visual rather than descriptive, focusing on what the hero sees and interacts with. |
| Descriptions | Descriptions are functional, focusing on the immediate environment of the game level. |
| Strong First Lines | The book starts with immediate action, showing students how to jump right into the conflict. |
| Immediacy & Engagement | The present tense creates a 'happening now' feeling that keeps the reader hooked. |

| Threes | The quest often involves three distinct challenges or levels to complete. |
| Whitespace & Negative Space | The layout uses whitespace to make the text accessible and less intimidating for new readers. |
| Art & Graphics | The art is essential to the story, acting as a co-narrator alongside the text. |
| Interactives & Gamification | The book invites the reader to 'play' along, making the reading experience an interactive event. |
Pace-Write It!
Spend 20 minutes having students write a 'Game Over' scene. Ask them to describe one obstacle Super Rabbit Boy faces, how he fails, and how he immediately restarts to try a different strategy, emphasizing the 'try-again' mindset.
