Eva's Campfire Adventure
by Rebecca Elliott
Pacing MaterialEva Wingdale is excited for a fun-filled camping trip with all of her owl friends. They soon discover that spending time in nature brings wonderful new discoveries.
Big Idea
Eva's Campfire Adventure teaches that stepping outside of one's comfort zone to embrace new experiences, like camping, builds confidence and strengthens friendships. Through the diary format, students learn that documenting personal challenges and triumphs helps us process our emotions and grow.
Discussion Questions
- 1.Why do you think Eva chooses to write her experiences in a diary instead of telling them to someone else?
- 2.Eva faces new challenges while camping; how does she use her friends to help her overcome her worries?
- 3.How does the author use illustrations and speech bubbles to show us how Eva is feeling without just telling us?
- 4.If you were going on a campfire adventure, what is one thing you would be excited about and one thing you might be nervous about?
- 5.How does the diary format change the way we read the story compared to a traditional storybook?
Lesson Plan
Learning Goals
- Identify the unique features of a diary-style narrative, including first-person perspective and informal tone.
- Analyze how visual elements like speech bubbles and drawings enhance the storytelling in a graphic-hybrid text.
- Practice personal narrative writing by documenting a specific event or feeling.
Activity Steps
- 1.Review pages from 'Eva's Campfire Adventure' to identify how the author uses speech bubbles and diary-style headers (e.g., date, mood).
- 2.Ask students to brainstorm a recent 'adventure' or new experience they had, such as trying a new food or visiting a new place.
- 3.Provide students with a template that includes space for a drawing at the top and lined paper below.
- 4.Have students write a short diary entry about their experience, including at least one speech bubble in their illustration.
- 5.Encourage students to add 'doodles' or labels to their drawings to match the energetic style of the Owl Diaries series.
- 6.Allow students to share their entries in small groups to practice reading their work aloud with expression.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!
Rebecca Elliott’s 'Eva's Campfire Adventure' is a masterclass in pacing for early readers, utilizing the diary format to create a sense of immediacy and intimacy. By breaking the narrative into bite-sized, date-stamped entries, Elliott maintains a brisk, energetic rhythm that keeps newly independent readers engaged without overwhelming them. The text functions as a bridge between picture books and chapter books, teaching students that writing is a tool for reflection and that every day holds a story worth telling. In this study, students will observe how Elliott uses the 'diary' structure to control the flow of information. The pacing is dictated by Eva’s internal monologue, which shifts rapidly between excitement, worry, and joy. By analyzing how the author balances text with 'flaptastic' illustrations, students learn that pacing isn't just about word count—it is about the strategic placement of visual pauses and the emotional beats that drive a character forward.
| Element | How to notice or teach it in the novel |
|---|---|
| Pace | The diary format creates a fast, episodic pace where each entry acts as a quick scene, keeping the reader moving through the camping trip. |
| Plot | The plot is driven by the specific milestones of the camping trip, such as pitching tents and eating treats, which provide clear, manageable story beats. |
| Prosody | Encourage students to read Eva's enthusiastic diary entries with an upbeat, conversational tone that reflects her bubbly personality. |
| Word Pause | Point out how the author uses short sentences and exclamation points to create natural pauses that emphasize Eva's excitement. |
| Concept | The core concept is the 'adventure' of trying something new, which serves as a relatable anchor for the entire narrative. |
| Voice & World View | Eva’s voice is consistently optimistic and observant, showing the world through the lens of a young, curious owl. |
| Setting & Place | The setting of Treetopolis and the campsite are established through colorful, detailed illustrations that ground the reader in Eva's world. |
| Point of View | The first-person 'I' perspective is essential here, as it makes the reader feel like they are reading Eva's private thoughts. |
| Original Characters | Eva and her friends have distinct personalities that are quickly established through their dialogue and actions in the campsite scenes. |
| Dialogue | Dialogue is often contained within speech bubbles, which helps readers distinguish between Eva's internal thoughts and her spoken words. |
| Details | The author includes specific details about camping gear and snacks to make the experience feel authentic and immersive. |
| Descriptions | Descriptions are kept brief and punchy, relying on the illustrations to fill in the visual gaps for the reader. |
| Strong First Lines | Each entry starts with a hook that immediately tells the reader how Eva is feeling or what the main challenge of the day is. |
| Immediacy & Engagement | The diary format creates a 'right now' feeling, making the reader feel like they are experiencing the campfire adventure alongside Eva. |
| Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures | The book uses a unique diary structure that alternates between narrative summary and specific, high-action scenes. |
| Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers | The diary format naturally uses 'flashbacks' as Eva recounts what happened earlier in the day, creating a reflective structure. |
| Tension & Suspense & Surprise | Tension is built through small, relatable worries, like whether the tent will stay up, which are resolved quickly to maintain a positive tone. |
| Page Turns and Chapter Breaks | Page turns are used to reveal new illustrations or the resolution of a small thought, encouraging the reader to keep flipping. |
| Performance | The text is written to be read aloud with high energy, mimicking the way a child might excitedly tell a friend about their day. |
| Personality | Eva’s personality is the engine of the book; her enthusiasm and occasional nervousness make her a highly relatable narrator. |
| Humor | Humor is found in the funny situations Eva gets into, such as camping mishaps, which are highlighted by the expressive art. |
| Pause | The illustrations act as visual pauses, allowing the reader to process the action before moving to the next diary entry. |
| Poetry and Poetic Devices | While prose-based, the rhythmic, repetitive nature of the diary entries creates a poetic flow that is easy for young readers to follow. |
| Repetition | Repetition of diary headers and common phrases helps build reading stamina and familiarity for the reader. |
| Rhythm | The rhythm is steady and predictable, mirroring the daily routine of the characters during their camping trip. |
| Punctuation | Exclamation points are used frequently to convey Eva's high energy and excitement about her adventure. |
| Questions | Eva often asks herself questions in her diary, which invites the reader to think about the situation alongside her. |
| Compare-Contrast | Eva often compares her expectations of camping with the reality of the experience, providing a simple compare-contrast structure. |
| Objects | Objects like tents, flashlights, and marshmallows are central to the plot and are clearly depicted in the illustrations. |
| Threes | The author often groups events or items in threes to create a satisfying, balanced narrative flow. |
| Whitespace & Negative Space | The layout uses whitespace effectively to separate diary entries, making the text feel less intimidating for new readers. |
| Art & Graphics | The full-color illustrations are integral to the story, providing context and emotional cues that support the text. |
| Interactives & Gamification | The diary format itself acts as an interactive element, encouraging students to imagine they are writing their own entries. |
Pace-Write It!
In this 20-minute workshop, students will practice 'The Diary Hook.' Ask students to write a single, three-sentence diary entry about a 'campfire' (or a pretend camping scenario). The first sentence must be a strong hook about a feeling, the second must describe an action, and the third must be a question. Students then draw a quick illustration with one speech bubble to accompany their text.
