All the Books
by Hayley Rocco
Pacing MaterialA picture book celebrating the joy of books and reading, exploring how every book can find its perfect reader.
Big Idea
Books connect us to ideas, adventures, and one another. Finding a book that fits our interests—and helping someone else find theirs—makes reading a shared joy.
Discussion Questions
- 1.Piper loves books. What do her actions tell us about why books matter to her?
- 2.How does discovering the library change Piper's ideas about having books and sharing them?
- 3.What might make a book just right for one reader but not another? Can the same book be just right for different reasons?
- 4.Which illustration helps you understand Piper's feelings? What details in the picture give you clues?
- 5.If you could help Piper choose a book for someone in our class, what would you want to know about that reader first?
Lesson Plan
Learning Goals
- Describe Piper's feelings and choices using evidence from the words or illustrations.
- Identify personal reading interests and recognize that classmates may have different preferences.
- Recommend a book using a relevant reason supported by its cover, pictures, or contents.
- Create an illustrated recommendation with a dictated, labeled, or independently written explanation.
- Participate in partner conversations by listening, taking turns, and responding to another reader's interests.
Activity Steps
- 1.Read All the Books aloud, stopping briefly to notice Piper's feelings about books and how the library changes her possibilities. Ask children to point to picture or text evidence.
- 2.Model a reader-interest card with two or three interests, such as animals, funny stories, or vehicles. Children draw or write their own cards; accept dictation and home-language labels.
- 3.Partners interview one another using the question, "What do you like reading or learning about?" Each partner selects a possible book match from a small, varied classroom collection.
- 4.Children examine their selected book's cover and several pages, then create a recommendation card: "I chose ___ for ___ because ___." They add a picture showing the reason for the match.
- 5.Partners share recommendations and browse the suggested books. Invite readers to explain what fits their interests or request a different match, emphasizing that a recommendation is an invitation, not a rule.
- 6.Arrange the books and cards in a class display. Close by asking how a classroom library can help many readers enjoy books, and establish a simple routine for returning and sharing them.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!
In All the Books, Hayley Rocco builds a story around Piper, a book-loving chipmunk, and her discovery of the library. This concrete situation gives young writers an accessible craft model: begin with something a character cares about, show how that interest shapes the character's choices, and introduce an experience that changes what the character understands. Piper's love of books also makes room for a larger conversation about access, sharing, and the many ways readers connect with stories. For a Pace-Write-Read study, treat pacing as the relationship among words, pictures, page turns, and a reader's voice. Read one selected passage at a natural storytelling speed, then reread it with a deliberate pause before an important moment. Ask which version helps listeners understand Piper's feelings. Examine John Rocco's illustrations alongside the language: a picture can invite a long look even when the accompanying text is brief. Children can then transfer these observations to their own miniature stories about finding a book for a reader. Rather than requiring every literary device to appear in the mentor text, investigate what is actually on the page and label invented examples as workshop experiments. The goal is intentional choice: writers can move quickly through a search, slow down at a discovery, and give readers time to enjoy a satisfying match.
| Element | How to notice or teach it in the novel |
|---|---|
| Pace | Compare a spread about Piper's activity with a spread that invites reflection on her feelings or discovery. Notice how the amount of text, illustration detail, and read-aloud speed affect how long readers linger. |
| Plot | Map Piper's story as beginning, middle, and end: her attachment to books, the experiences that challenge or expand her understanding, and the possibilities opened by the library. Use evidence from the book to name the events between those points. |
| Prosody | Reread a short passage with expression that matches Piper's feelings. Ask children how changes in pitch, stress, and speed help listeners understand the same words. |
| Word Pause | Choose an important word in a passage about books or the library and try a brief pause immediately before or after it. Discuss whether that pause emphasizes Piper's interest or discovery without changing the printed wording. |
| Concept | Distinguish the topic, books, from a larger idea: books can bring joy to many readers. Ask how Piper's experiences turn that idea into a story rather than simply a statement. |
| Voice & World View | Look for language and images that present books as valuable and exciting. Discuss how Piper's view of books develops and how the storytelling invites readers to care about her. |
| Setting & Place | Compare the places where Piper encounters or keeps books with the library. Identify picture details that show how each place affects what she can do. |
| Point of View | Notice how the narration names Piper and directs our attention to her experiences. Retell one moment beginning "I am Piper…" and discuss how a first-person version would sound different. |
| Original Characters | Identify what makes Piper more specific than simply "a chipmunk": her passion for books, feelings, and choices. Children can create a different animal reader with a distinct reading interest. |
| Dialogue | Look for any direct speech and distinguish spoken words from narration. For an extension, invent a clearly labeled conversation in which Piper asks a classmate what they like to read. |
| Details | Invite children to find small details about Piper and the books in John Rocco's illustrations. Ask which details help explain an action or feeling rather than merely decorate the page. |
| Descriptions | Compare what the text tells readers with what the pictures show about Piper's book-filled world. Practice adding one precise descriptive word to a child's own drawing of a reading place. |
| Strong First Lines | Read the actual opening aloud and ask what it makes us learn or wonder about Piper. Children can test their own opening lines that immediately introduce a character's love of books. |
| Immediacy & Engagement | Ask how quickly readers understand that books matter to Piper. Have children point to an early action or image that makes them want to follow her story. |
| Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures | Find a moment that feels like a specific scene and compare it with any passage that covers a broader pattern of activity. Explain that a scene lets us experience a moment, while summary helps the story move ahead. |
| Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers | Check whether the story actually moves into the past or future rather than assuming it does. If these devices are absent, use Piper's story as a contrast and invent a separate "Before this…" sentence or a suspenseful stopping point. |
| Tension & Suspense & Surprise | Identify what complicates Piper's relationship with books and what readers hope will happen. Discuss how the library changes the possibilities available to her. |
| Page Turns and Chapter Breaks | Before turning a page near an important change, ask children what they expect to see next. Explain that this picture book uses page turns, rather than chapter breaks, to control when readers receive new information. |
| Performance | Invite children to act out Piper's changing feelings while a partner narrates a short retelling. Keep gestures connected to the book's events so performance supports comprehension. |
| Personality | Collect evidence of Piper's personality from what she does with books and how she responds to events. Ask children to support a describing word with an action or illustration. |
| Humor | Invite children to identify any moment they find funny, including visual details involving Piper and books. Ask what creates the humor, while allowing classmates to respond differently. |
| Pause | Pause after an important change in Piper's understanding so children can study her expression and surroundings. Contrast this whole-moment reflection with a brief pause around an individual word. |
| Poetry and Poetic Devices | Listen for sound patterns or especially vivid language in the actual text, without treating the book as a rhyming poem. If no clear example emerges, let children create their own alliterative phrase about books as an extension. |
| Repetition | Track recurring references to books and any repeated words, actions, or visual motifs you find. Discuss how returning to books keeps Piper's passion at the center of the story. |
| Rhythm | Read a selected passage aloud and listen to the pattern of shorter and longer phrases. Children can tap softly at phrase endings, then consider how that pattern supports the storytelling. |
| Punctuation | Choose a passage and notice its actual punctuation marks before reading it aloud. Model how those marks guide stopping, expression, and grouping of words. |
| Questions | Generate reader questions about Piper's choices and the library, distinguishing those from any questions printed in the story. Invite children to use a question to begin their own book-matching scene. |
| Compare-Contrast | Compare Piper's understanding of books before and after discovering the library. Connect that comparison to the difference between keeping a book for oneself and making books available to many readers. |
| Objects | Treat the books as important story objects, not just background decoration. Ask how their presence, arrangement, and use help readers understand Piper's priorities. |
| Threes | Check the text and illustrations for a meaningful group or sequence of three; do not assume the story uses a rule of three. As a writing experiment, children can invent three possible book choices before their character finds a match. |
| Whitespace & Negative Space | Compare a visually busy spread with a more open area or spread, if available. Ask how space around Piper, books, or text directs attention and changes the feeling of reading. |
| Art & Graphics | Study how John Rocco's illustrations communicate Piper's feelings and the importance of books. Ask what readers learn from the art that is not explicitly stated in the accompanying words. |
| Interactives & Gamification | Use the story as the basis for a teacher-created "Find a Reader Match" game with classroom books and interest cards. Keep this distinct from the book's format, and celebrate thoughtful reasons rather than speed or a single correct answer. |
Pace-Write It!
20-minute Pace-Write-Read task: "The Moment of the Book Match." Minutes 0–4: Revisit a spread connected to Piper's discovery of the library; read it naturally, then try a deliberate pause and discuss the effect. Minutes 4–6: Model a three-panel story about an animal reader searching for a book, considering a possible match, and finding one they want to read. Minutes 6–13: Children draw their own three panels and add labels, dictated sentences, or one sentence per panel. Ask them to move quickly through the search and give extra attention to the discovery through a larger picture, a precise detail, or an additional sentence. Minutes 13–18: Partners read or orally tell their stories, pausing at the discovery; listeners explain where they felt anticipation or excitement. Minutes 18–20: Children revise one word, detail, or reading pause and share how their choice helps an audience enjoy the book-finding moment. Clarify that these are student-created stories inspired by Piper, not additional events from the published book.
Classroom Activities
Piper's Perfect-Match Bookshop
Children become book matchmakers, connecting classmates with classroom books based on their interests. Each child creates a reader-interest card, recommends a real book to a partner, and helps build a display celebrating the idea that different readers enjoy different books. Explain that this pretend bookshop recommends books rather than selling them; connect its sharing system to Piper's discovery of the library.
