A Horse Named Jack

by Linda Vander Heyden

Jack is a rather silly horse. And when bored, he takes it upon himself to unlatch his stall and go for an adventure through the farm before escaping into the neighbor's garden for a snack.

Big Idea

Jack's silly escape shows how a character's choices can set an adventure in motion—and affect others along the way. Readers can explore curiosity, responsibility, and the ways words and pictures make a story funny.

Discussion Questions

1.What do Jack's actions tell us about his personality? Which words or pictures support your thinking?
2.Why might Jack decide to leave his stall? What else could he do when he feels bored?
3.How does moving from the stall to the farm and then to the neighbor's garden change Jack's adventure?
4.Which moment feels funniest to you, and how do the words or illustrations help make it funny?
5.How might the neighbor feel about a horse eating in the garden? What could Jack do to help make things right?

Lesson Plan

⏱ 45 minutes📦 A copy of A Horse Named Jack, large paper, small paper cards or sticky notes, pencils, crayons or markers, child-safe scissors, and glue sticks or tape. Optional: a teacher-prepared paper horse template.

Learning Goals

Identify Jack, the main settings, and important events using evidence from the words and illustrations.
Retell Jack's adventure in a logical sequence using first, next, then, and finally.
Explain how Jack's choices can affect another character or place.
Use drawings, labels, dictation, or short sentences to communicate a story.
Experiment with changes in reading speed and pauses to convey action, anticipation, and humor.

Activity Steps

1.Read the book aloud, briefly inviting children to notice Jack's choices and the places he visits. After reading, list the major events together, checking the book rather than relying only on memory.
2.Give partners a large sheet of paper. Have them draw Jack's stall, the farm locations shown in the book, and the neighbor's garden, then connect the locations with a route.
3.Children make a small paper horse and three to five event cards. Each card includes a drawing and a label, dictated sentence, or written sentence describing an actual event.
4.Place the event cards along the route. Add arrows where the telling should move along and a pause symbol where listeners need time to look, wonder, or enjoy a funny moment; explain that storytelling speed is not necessarily Jack's physical speed.
5.Partners move their horse along the map and retell the adventure, practicing their chosen speeds and pauses. Listeners identify one detail that helped them understand Jack.
6.Add a separate card labeled "Our imagined next choice" showing how Jack could respond responsibly after his garden snack. Share maps and distinguish events from the book from children's invented continuations.

Pace-Write-Read Study with Pace-Write It!

In a Pace-Write-Read study, A Horse Named Jack offers young writers an approachable story engine: a bored horse makes a choice, and that choice carries him from a familiar stall into a larger adventure. Follow the movement from stall to farm to the neighbor's garden, asking how each new event changes what readers expect. Children can discover that pacing means managing a listener's attention, not simply reading everything quickly. Use the actual wording and illustrations to investigate the author's craft. Read a selected passage twice, first steadily and then with purposeful changes in speed, emphasis, and silence. Discuss which delivery makes Jack's behavior clearer or funnier. Keep author-created features—such as wording, punctuation, and page breaks—distinct from performance choices supplied by the reader. Then invite children to draw, dictate, or write a tiny Jack-inspired scene. They can move quickly through an action and slow down before revealing an unexpected snack. Returning to their work as readers helps them test whether their words, picture details, and pauses communicate the intended effect. The element studies below are observation prompts, not claims that every device appears in the book; where a device is absent, use a clearly labeled writing experiment.

Element	How to notice or teach it in the novel
Pace	Trace how the telling moves from Jack's boredom to his escape and garden snack. Try a brisk delivery for an action passage and a slower delivery before a reveal, then discuss which better fits the actual text.
Plot	Build a cause-and-effect chain: Jack is bored, unlatches his stall, explores the farm, and reaches the neighbor's garden. Ask which events depend on his first choice.
Prosody	Use expression, stress, and phrasing to convey Jack's silliness without changing the words. Have children explain how two different readings change their impression of the same passage.
Word Pause	Choose an actual phrase about Jack's actions and experiment with a brief pause before a key word. Ask whether the pause helps listeners anticipate the action or makes the phrase harder to understand.
Concept	Name the story's central premise: a bored horse lets himself out and goes adventuring. Invite children to create a new premise by changing one part, such as the animal or its destination.
Voice & World View	Notice how the wording presents Jack's mischief and shapes the story's humorous outlook. Contrast enjoying his silliness with considering how his garden visit might affect the neighbor.
Setting & Place	Compare the stall, farm, and neighbor's garden using details visible or stated in the book. Discuss what each place allows Jack to do that the previous place does not.
Point of View	Examine who tells the story and what the narrator lets readers know about Jack. As a separate writing experiment, dictate a sentence beginning "I am Jack" and discuss how that changes the perspective.
Original Characters	Ask what makes Jack more specific than simply "a horse," including his boredom, latch-opening, and adventurous choices. Children can invent another animal with a distinctive habit that could start a story.
Dialogue	Check whether the book includes spoken words and how readers can recognize them. If dialogue is absent, invent a clearly labeled exchange between Jack and the neighbor and consider what it adds.
Details	Focus on the stall latch as a small detail with a large effect on the plot. Ask children to find another textual or visual detail that helps explain an event.
Descriptions	Look for words and pictures that communicate Jack's appearance, movements, or surroundings. Children can describe one scene with a precise action word and a useful sensory detail.
Strong First Lines	Read the book's actual opening aloud and ask what it establishes or makes children wonder. Compare it with a student-created opening about Jack's boredom without presenting the invented line as a quotation.
Immediacy & Engagement	Identify the moment when children first feel drawn into Jack's adventure. Discuss whether an action, a picture, a surprising possibility, or the language captures their attention.
Story Scenes & Summaries & Unique Structures	Compare a moment shown in detail with any stretch that moves through events more briefly. Have children retell Jack's escape in one summary sentence, then expand the latch-opening into a small scene.
Flashback & Flash Forward & Cliffhangers	Check whether the story stays in chronological order rather than assuming it uses time shifts. As an extension, pause before a discovery or invent a brief "earlier that morning" scene, labeling it as new writing.
Tension & Suspense & Surprise	Pause as Jack moves beyond his stall and invite predictions about where he might go. After reading, separate a moment that created uncertainty from a moment that surprised or amused the class.
Page Turns and Chapter Breaks	Because this is a picture book, study page turns rather than assuming chapter breaks. Inspect what readers know before a selected turn and what new action or visual information appears afterward.
Performance	Retell Jack's adventure with a narrator and a child using safe, in-place horse gestures. Use expression and stillness to communicate curiosity and mischief without racing around the classroom.
Personality	Connect descriptions of Jack as silly or curious to evidence from his actions and the illustrations. Ask how a cautious horse might behave differently at the stall latch.
Humor	Explore the mismatch between an ordinary farm horse and a horse who opens his own stall and visits a neighbor's garden for a snack. Let children identify the specific picture or wording that makes their favorite moment funny.
Pause	Use a longer pause after a funny scene so children can examine the illustration and react. Contrast this scene-level pause with a short pause inside a spoken phrase.
Poetry and Poetic Devices	Listen for any rhyme, alliteration, repeated sounds, or other playful language in the actual text. Revisit an example children can hear, or create a separate alliterative phrase about Jack if the selected passage has none.
Repetition	Look for repeated words, sentence patterns, or recurring kinds of action rather than assuming a refrain. Discuss how repetition can build expectation as Jack's adventure unfolds.
Rhythm	Tap gently while reading a short passage to notice its natural phrasing and sound pattern. Compare that rhythm with a student-written sentence about Jack, avoiding a forced beat that distorts the language.
Punctuation	Examine punctuation in a selected sentence and model how it guides phrasing or expression. Children can try a period and an exclamation mark on an invented Jack sentence and compare the effects.
Questions	Distinguish questions printed in the story, if any, from questions readers bring to it. Use "Where will Jack go next?" to show how wondering can sustain attention during an adventure.
Compare-Contrast	Compare Jack inside his stall with Jack exploring beyond it, using evidence about his actions and surroundings. Then compare Jack's enjoyment of the garden with the neighbor's possible perspective.
Objects	Study the latch as an object that enables the adventure and the garden plants as objects that attract Jack. Ask how changing either would change the plot.
Threes	Check whether any actual actions, phrases, or visual details form a group of three. If not, create a separate three-beat Jack scene—notice, approach, nibble—and discuss how the final beat can deliver a payoff.
Whitespace & Negative Space	Inspect a spread for open areas around words or illustrations and discuss where the eye goes first. Children can leave open space around the horse on their own page to test whether it makes Jack easier to notice.
Art & Graphics	Read the illustrations for clues about Jack's expression, movement, and location. Identify something the pictures communicate that the words do not state directly.
Interactives & Gamification	Use the paper story map as a retelling game: partners move Jack only after explaining the next event. Add prediction stops at the stall exit and garden approach without treating the original book as an interactive game.

Pace-Write It!

20-minute Pace-Write-Read task: "Jack Spots a Snack." Minutes 0–4: Revisit the book's garden sequence and identify how the actual words, pictures, and page turns guide attention. Minutes 4–7—Pace: Model two deliveries of a short selected passage, one rushed and one with a purposeful pause, and let children explain the difference. Minutes 7–13—Write: Children create an imagined three-panel mini-scene in which Jack notices something in the neighbor's garden, approaches it, and reveals his snack choice. They draw and add labels, dictate, or write one sentence per panel; mark the work "Our invented Jack scene." Minutes 13–18—Read: Partners read or tell their scenes, testing a brisk approach and a pause before the snack reveal. Listeners say what helped them anticipate or enjoy the ending. Minutes 18–20: Children revise one word, picture detail, or pause mark and share how the change affected the telling.

Classroom Activities

Jack's Stop-and-Go Story Map

Children build a paper map of Jack's journey from his stall through the farm to the neighbor's garden. They move a paper horse along the route, retell events from the book, and use movement and pause symbols to explore story pacing. Finally, they add a clearly labeled, imagined responsible next choice for Jack.
